Case Study: escalla's Partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust

escalla has been a trusted partner to Barts Health NHS Trust for over 15 years, providing essential resources and 24/7 support services to facilitate a wide range of learning and development initiatives. These efforts have supported Barts Health's ongoing digital health journey, helping to ensure the successful deployment of advanced healthcare technologies across the Trust's multiple hospitals. escalla’s collaboration with Barts Health exemplifies the vital role of effective training, user support, and systems implementation in the transformation of healthcare services. This case study delves into some of the key projects that escalla has supported, with a focus on the WeConnect initiative from 2021 to 2024.

escalla’s Role in Supporting Barts Health NHS Trust

escalla’s expertise in providing floorwalking, user support, and training has been integral to the successful rollout of various digital systems at Barts Health. Their floorwalkers are deployed across hospitals to provide immediate on-site assistance, ensuring that healthcare professionals can seamlessly transition to new systems and technologies. escalla has provided 24/7 support for guiding users through complex workflows, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that the systems are utilised effectively.

In particular, escalla’s involvement with the WeConnect initiative has been instrumental. WeConnect is a multifaceted project that encompasses the introduction of electronic health record (EHR) systems, e-prescribing, and other advanced clinical documentation systems across Barts Health’s hospitals. Over the years, escalla has continuously supported Barts Health with both initial deployments and ongoing system optimisation, ensuring that clinical staff are fully equipped to utilise these technologies to improve patient care.

Key Projects Supported by escalla

e2021: ePMA and Advanced Clinical Docs Go-Live

In 2021, escalla provided critical support for the implementation of electronic prescribing and medication administration (ePMA) and advanced clinical documentation systems across four major hospitals within the Barts Health NHS Trust: St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Royal London Hospital (RLH), Whipps Cross Hospital (WXH), and Newham University Hospital (NUH).

escalla deployed 21 floorwalkers across these sites to assist with the go-live of the ePMA and advanced clinical documentation systems. These systems aimed to streamline prescribing processes, enhance patient safety, and improve overall clinical documentation accuracy. The floorwalkers worked in close partnership with Barts Health’s internal staff to provide real-time on-the-ground support as the system was introduced across adult inpatient (IP) patient departments in all four hospitals.

Our team played a crucial role in guiding clinicians through the system's features, answering questions, and addressing any immediate challenges. Their presence allowed for a smoother transition to the new systems, reducing the risk of disruption to patient care and ensuring that staff could confidently adopt the digital tools.

2023: Rollout at Paediatric and Maternity Units

escalla continued its partnership with Barts Health in 2023 by supporting the rollout of the ePMA and advanced clinical documentation systems in the paediatric and maternity units at The Royal London Hospital (RLH), Whipps Cross Hospital (WXH), and Newham University Hospital (NUH).

For this phase, escalla deployed 15 floorwalkers who worked closely with clinical staff in these specialised departments. The floorwalkers assisted with the integration of the new digital tools into daily clinical practices and ensured that the staff in paediatric and maternity units could fully leverage the system's functionalities. Given the complex nature of these specialised healthcare areas, the role of the floorwalkers was especially critical in ensuring that clinicians were comfortable using the systems while maintaining high standards of patient care.

This project underscored escalla's ability to support a wide variety of clinical settings and tailor their approach to the unique needs of each department.

"I have been working with escalla for a number of years now as Barts Health increases its digital footprint. Their floor walking support is second to none. Their staff have a range of skill sets, are conscientious, hardworking and have been a joy to have as part of the programme team. On the rare occasion we had a problem it was resolved quickly and without fuss. They will always be my go to company for floor walkers."

2024: Critical Care and Perioperative Support

In 2024, escalla extended its support to the critical care and perioperative/theatre departments across four Barts Health sites. A team of 33 floorwalkers was deployed to assist with the adoption of a new electronic record-keeping system, which was designed to provide near real-time patient data to clinical staff. This system eliminated the need for manual data entry, enabling faster and more accurate decision-making and improving patient outcomes.

The floorwalkers worked across 104 shifts, covering 126 clinical areas and assisting in the mapping of 669 parameters across various devices. In addition, they were involved in deploying 105 workstations on wheels (WOWs) and personal computers (PCs) to ensure that the new system could be easily accessed by clinicians in critical care and perioperative settings.

This project highlighted escalla's capacity to scale its support services to meet the demands of large-scale implementations, ensuring that clinicians could access the system seamlessly and use it effectively in high-pressure environments such as intensive care units and operating theatres.

Key Achievements and Impact

escalla’s support has spanned multiple Barts Health sites, including St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London, Whipps Cross, and Newham hospitals. By deploying a large team of floorwalkers at these sites, escalla ensured that each department had the necessary support to fully adopt new systems and processes. This widespread coverage allowed Barts Health to efficiently implement digital tools across the Trust.

The team at escalla have played an integral role in the successful go-live of various digital health systems, including ePMA, advanced clinical documentation systems, and electronic record-keeping systems. Their hands-on approach, which included in-depth training, real-time support, and problem-solving, contributed to a smooth transition to these new systems, minimising disruptions and enhancing system adoption.

By helping staff integrate electronic prescribing, clinical documentation, and real-time patient data systems, escalla’s support directly contributed to improved efficiency and data accuracy. The new systems allowed for the reduction of manual processes, improving both the speed and quality of clinical decision-making. This ultimately led to enhanced patient safety and care delivery.

escalla demonstrated a high degree of scalability and flexibility in meeting Barts Health's evolving needs. Whether assisting with initial system deployments, supporting specialised units such as paediatrics and maternity, or managing large-scale rollouts in critical care and theatres, escalla was able to adapt its approach and team size to ensure the effective delivery of support across the Trust.

Feedback from clinicians and healthcare staff highlighted the effectiveness of the floorwalkers in ensuring the smooth adoption of new technologies. Staff appreciated the immediate, on-site assistance that allowed them to quickly resolve issues and get the most out of the new systems. This close collaboration between escalla and Barts Health’s internal teams fostered a strong sense of trust and partnership.

Conclusion

escalla’s long-standing partnership with Barts Health NHS Trust has been instrumental in supporting the Trust’s digital transformation journey. Through the WeConnect initiative and other critical projects, escalla has provided the resources, expertise, and support needed to help Barts Health implement complex digital systems and improve patient care delivery. The partnership exemplifies the critical role of effective training, floorwalking, and user support in the successful implementation of healthcare technologies. As Barts Health continues to innovate and expand its digital health capabilities, escalla will remain a key partner in ensuring the success of these initiatives and the ongoing improvement of healthcare services across the Trust.
