RiO for Students

Case Study: escalla and South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust – RiO for Students

For over 25 years, escalla has partnered with the NHS to deliver innovative training solutions that enhance workforce development and improve patient care. South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) is a leading provider of mental health services in the UK. Recognising the need to modernise its RiO clinical systems training for student nurses and doctors, the Trust collaborated with escalla to develop the "RiO for Students" e-Learning course.

This initiative aimed to address key challenges in training delivery by replacing outdated video-based learning and reducing reliance on instructor-led sessions. The resulting e-Learning programme enhanced engagement, ensured regulatory compliance, and improved the onboarding experience for student healthcare professionals.

Key Challenges Addressed

  • Resource Constraints: Limited instructor availability made it difficult to provide timely, consistent training for all students.
  • Time-Intensive Training: Instructor-led classroom sessions reduced opportunities for hands-on clinical experience.
  • Inconsistent Onboarding: Variability in training delivery led to gaps in students' understanding of core RiO functionalities.
  • Limited Knowledge Transfer: Previous video-based training lacked interactivity, reducing retention and engagement.
  • Content Accuracy: The inability to update video learning materials caused them to become outdated as system changes occurred.

The Solution: RiO for Students e-Learning Course

Course Features and Design Enhancements

Following consultations with SWLSTG stakeholders, escalla developed a structured, modular e-Learning programme designed to meet clinical and regulatory requirements while maximising engagement and learning retention.

  • Day One Readiness: Modules covered essential RiO tasks, inclusing IT security policies, Smartcard usage, and key patient record functionalities.
  • Interactive Learning: Incorporation of real-life scenarios, simulations, and contextual information enhanced engagement.
  • Modular Structure: Lessons were divided into bite-sized modules, allowing flexibility and future scalability for other staff roles.
  • Assessments and Tracking: A dedicated final module included role-based assessments to ensure competency before granting RiO access.
  • Future-proofing: The course structure allowed for updates to reflect system changes, maintaining long-term accuracy and usability.

Implementation Process

Following the ADDIE Framework

The project was structured using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) and adopted an AGILE methodology to ensure a smooth transition to digital learning.

1. Analysis

  • A scoping meeting was conducted to define objectives, confirm lesson requirements, and align content with Trust training priorities.
  • Trainers and clinical leads provided input to ensure content accuracy and compliance with NHS guidelines.

2. Design

  • A prototype was developed using Articulate Storyline 360, integrating SWLSTG branding and accessibility standards.
  • Key lesson structures were mapped out, focusing on usability and interactive learning.
  • Developers received recorded training sessions from the Trust to ensure clinical accuracy in content development.

3. Development

  • Screen captures were conducted remotely, with lessons built into a "Try Me" interactive fornat, simulating real RiO processes.
  • Content was iteratively reviewed using an online tool, allowing for real-time stakeholder feedback and improvements.
  • SCORM Cloud and WCAG accessibility testing ensured compliance and compatibility before deployment.

4. Implementation

  • The modules were integrated into SWLSTG's Compass Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Students were onboarded with access to self-paced learning, ensuring flexibility in training completion.

5. Evaluation

  • Post-launch feedback was gathered from students and trainers to refine content.
  • Assessment tracking via LMS provided insights into student engagement and learning outcomes.

Results & Key Benefits

The implementation of the RiO for Students e-Learning course delivered significant advantages:

Allowed educators to focus on specialised clinical training.

Students could complete training independently, accelerating their readiness for patient interactions.

Consistent content delivery improved adherence to Trust protocols and best practices.

Interactive modules enhanced engagement, improving knowledge retention and preparedness.

Reduced instructor time and logistical demands led to resource efficiencies.

LMS Tracking enabled the Trust to monitor completion rates and assess student proficiency before granting RiO access.
