Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
Course Outline
During this two-day interactive course, you'll learn how to recognise when someone may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and conduct an intervention. This will include creating a plan that will support their immediate safety - with follow up.
The ASIST method has been proven to reduce suicidal thoughts in those at risk and is considered the gold standard in suicide prevention.
No prior learning is required.
What you’ll learn:
Over the course of their two-day workshop, ASIST participants learn to:
Understand the ways that personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions.
Provide guidance and suicide first aid to a person at risk of suicide in ways that meet their individual safety needs.
Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and develop a plan to increase the safety of the individual at risk of suicide.
Appreciate the value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community at large.
Recognize other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care.
Understand the reasons behind thoughts of suicide and reasons for living.
Recognise invitations for help and barriers of seeking help.

Learn and develop knowledge on the ASIST intervention model
Adapting to a specific circumstance of a person at risk and how to work collaboratively to keep the person safe
Recognising the importance of life – promotion and self – care.
Who’s it for?
No previous experience or knowledge of ASIST is required and anyone over the age of 16 can participate.
The course is aimed at people who are working in organisations, who may come across people experiencing suicidal thoughts.
How it's delivered:
This course is delivered live on-line or in a classroom with a trainer and can be accessed via a PC, Mac or Tablet. There will be group work and breakout sessions. You can interact, ask questions, and practice new skills – all without leaving your desk.
